Palo Alto just approved a proposal requiring any new home builder make sure that they include the pre-wiring for electric cars' charging stations. The inclusion is surprisingly inexpensive, only costing $200 for a new home install, but 2-3x that amount for a pre-existing home. Personally, I don't understand the need for the local government to encroach on our lives even further than they already are, but does it really matter if all they do is pre-wire for a 240V unit? I wish it were the standard 220V that is used for your washer and dryer units, but that would just be too easy.
Honestly, if the electric cars that this mandate caters to were more common than they are, I would have no qualms, however they aren't, so I have issues. What do you think? Is this just another ridiculous way for a local government to make money or tell you how to live your life? Or is it simply catching up with the times that are inevitably coming? Whichever the case, we will find out in the next 5 years or so. I suppose there can't be that many more houses being built in Palo Alto anyway. Let's see what happens!
